“Rivers as Bridges” was a three-state pilot project organized in 2012 as an exchange between students in the United States, along the Mississippi River, and Chinese students who live along the Yangtze River. The goal was to recognize our mutual connections. Rivers are civilization’s cultural estuaries and mainstays of humankind’s survival. Rivers have shaped knowledge, beliefs, culture and political economies. River people live by stories which affirm personhood, purpose and dignity. Shared stories create community. The Yangtze and Mississippi are storied rivers and the people who live there, as THIS VIDEO shows, share a common bond.
